Will Social Security Award Me Disability in Missouri If I Don't Have Enough Work Credits?
In certain situations, an individual may be entitled to receive Social Security Disability even if they do not have enough work credits. Generally, this would involve a disabled adult child (a child who was disabled prior to the age of 22) of a parent who is entitled to retirement or disability benefits.
In this case, the adult child may be able to receive disability benefits based upon the parent who is receiving a Social Security benefit. Individuals filing in Missouri on a parent's record must be found medically disabled to be entitled to these benefits and meet other non-disability criteria.

If you do not have a living parent who is entitled to a benefit, or a deceased parent's record to file on, there is one other Social Security Disability program that may award you disability benefits. This disability program is based upon need rather than insured status through work credits, and is known as SSI or Supplemental Security Income.
In order to be awarded disability benefits under this program you must meet income and resource limits, just as you do with other social programs, and be found medically disabled.
For SSI, income may be described as wages, pensions, annuities, long or short disability benefits, workman's compensation, trust funds, etc. Resources might be land, vehicles, life insurance, cash, or other items (i.e. antiques, furniture, jewelry, etc.).
If you meet the limitations for both resources and income and you are found medically disabled, you may be awarded Supplemental Security Income disability benefits. No matter which disability program you file for, you must go through the same disability process in order to be found medically disabled.
