Applying for disability with depressionFiling for disability is the same in Kentucky as it is in all other states. The SSD and SSI system is federal. Therefore, you can apply for disability on the basis of depression as a disability. As with all medical conditions that are either physical or mental in nature, you can be considered for disability through the sequential evaluation process, a process that takes into consideration whether or not you can return to your past work and, if the answer is no, further considers whether you have the ability to do some type of other work. If the answer to that is also no, you may possible be given a disability award under SSD or the SSI disability program. It is also possible to be approved for disability with depression through the disability listings. If you apply for disability with depression as your main allegation, bear in mind that you should have recent medical records as well as a history of treatment for depression to document your case. If you do not have recent treatment, or have never had treatment, you will most likely be sent to a disability medical exam. If an exam is scheduled, it may be a mental status exam, or a full psychiatric exam. It may also be an IQ or memory scale evaluation. Please remember that if you have been given antidepressant medication but these were given by your regular family doctor, you probably will not have the type of medical evidence that Social Security is looking for. Most internists do not provide much in their notes when it comes to functional limitations, but this is the type of information disability examiners are trying to evaluate.
