What if I apply for disability for anxiety but have not had recent treatment?
If you have no medical treatment or your medical treatment is more than ninety days prior to your filing for disability for anxiety, you do not have enough objective medical evidence for the disability examiner to make their disability determination. In order to get the necessary evidence, you will attend a consultative examination with a doctor paid by Social Security. These are often fairly short examinations to provide a minimal mental status for the disability examiner to make their determination.
While these examinations are often not that thorough, they are better than having no medical evidence to support your disability claim. You should remember the minute you go into the consultative doctor's you are being evaluated. Of course, you should not overstate the problems caused by your anxiety, but you should not down play the affect your anxiety has on your every day life.
Social Security will pay for your consultative examination. You are only responsible for getting to the examination.
