Can a disability lawyer or representative charge an hourly fee for just helping to file the claim?
You seem very knowledgeable regarding disability cases. I had a potential client approach me just to help with the application. To charge 21% of back pay seems excessive. Is there any way to just charge an hourly fee for completing the application?

Social Security does not allow hourly fees when representing disability claimants. Also, you may want to consider the fact that you may have to represent your potential client at a disability hearing before an administrative law judge.
Since I do not have the specifics of this case, you may also consider the fact that you would receive no fee if there is no back payment of benefits. You would only be entitled to any fees addressed in your fee agreement.
