You can always choose to see the judge in person, which brings advantages
If you have been denied on a disability reconsideration and have requested, or are about to request a disability hearing, there is the possibility that may you end up having your hearing conducted at a site other than a social security hearing office...by video.
Hearings conducted by video can make it easier for both the claimant and the ALJ; however, a claimant who is uncomfortable with having a hearing by video has the right to an in-person hearing if they so demand.
Why are video hearings sometimes scheduled? Claimants have, in the past, been required to drive significant distances from end of their state to the next to get to a hearing office. Likewise, judges have been required to drive to satellite hearing offices to accomodate the inaccessibility of a hearing office. It is for such reasons that the social security administration began to make video hearings available.
Note: you always the right to decline a video hearing in favor of an in-person hearing, though this may result in a longer time to get a disability hearing date.
