Can I file for SSI online?
"I am a lawyer in Canada and want to help my brother apply for SSI. He is already in receipt of SSDI and is indigent. When I go to apply online, the system does not let me proceed. I wonder if you are aware 0f how I might make such an application online on behalf of my brother and relate whether it is necessary (or preferable) to attend in person at the SSA office to commence the disability application process."
A couple of things come to mind in reading your question. The reason you cannot file an SSI disability claim online is that there is no online process for SSI at this time. Secondly, you stated that your brother is receiving SSDI benefits; if he is receiving more than the current individual SSI monthly disability amount of $771.00, there would be no reason to file for SSI as the claim would be denied for excess income. However, if he is receiving less than that amount and he is indigent, then you should help him file an application at an SSA office.
