When and why will Social Security send a person for an Xray?Social Security Disability examiners must have current medical evidence to make your disability medical determination. If you have no medical treatment or no medical treatment within the past three months, your disability examiner may schedule you for a consultative examination and as part of that examination they may request an x ray. Social Security pays for both the consultative examination and x-ray; consequently, there would be no cost to you, the disability applicant. Even if you have a medical treatment history that includes recent medical treatment for your disabling condition, the disability examiner may need some type of objective medical testing like an x-ray to substantiate your doctor's medical notes. Or, they may just need the x-ray for additional clarification. If this is true for your disability claim, they will send you for the x-ray without the consultative examination. Social Security does not provide medical treatment; therefore they would only send you for an x-ray if it were absolutely necessary to make a decision on your disability claim. Note: there are somewhat rare instances in which a disability examiner who is working on your disability case may even decide to send you to an appointment for just an xray only.
