What happens to my disability benefits if I move out of state?Social Security Disability benefits are federal benefits and as such they are not affected by your move to another state. Social Security will not change your address until you have actually moved to the new address, so if you move to another state you should contact the local Social Security office and inform them of your new address. It is important to keep your address current with Social Security because your benefits could be stopped if Social Security receives mail back. Additionally, if you receive SSI disability you should contact the local Social Security office as soon as possible. SSI disability benefit amounts are based in part on living arrangements and if your living arrangement changes it could increase or decrease your SSI disability amount. Also, some states offer state supplements to SSI disability beneficiaries and those supplements can be lost or provided dependent upon the state. If you move from a state that has the supplements to one that does not your disability benefits may decrease.
