Can you get short-term disability if you receive SSDI?Very often, there is confusion as to what external disability related benefits might affect eligibility for SSDI benefits. The simple answer to the question above is, yes, you can receive short-term disability benefits if you receive SSDI. However, this does not mean the amount you receive in SSDI will not lessen the amount you are potentially going to receive in short term disability benefits. Your short term disability provided determines the offset, if any, caused by the SSDI benefits you receive. While we are discussing this issue, the same situation would be true if you are eligible for long term disability while receiving SSDI. The only disability related benefits that could potentially affect the amount you are able to receive in SSDI benefits would be worker compensation benefits. Social Security may offset the amount you receive in SSDI if you receive workers compensation benefits. The reason for this is that worker compensation benefits are considered another federal benefit based upon disability and, as such, it could potentially affect your SSDI benefits. There are too many variables with regard to worker compensation benefits; you should report that you are receiving benefit or if you have made a settlement. The non- report of workers compensation benefits has caused many large overpayments for disability beneficiaries. One other disability related benefit that should be mentioned is VA disability benefits. If you receive SSDI, your benefits amount or eligibility is not affected. However, in some VA disability cases the receipt of Social Security could affect the amount of VA receivable. If you receive VA or you have a claim pending, you should contact the VA to ascertain how the interaction between the programs might affect your VA.
