Is Social Security Disability and SSI temporary or permanent?Topic: Social Security Disability, temporary or permanent? Question: When you are approved for Social Security Disability is that forever? Do you have to prove you are still disabled after a certain time frame? Here's the short answer: Social Security Disability and SSI should not be thought of as permanent disability since SSA always holds open the possibility that a person may improve medically. That said, most individuals who get a disability award will receive those benefits for the remainder of their lifetime. The longer answer: Everyone who is approved for disability benefits will be subject to a periodic review of their claim. This can happen in as little as one year from the time of their approval or as much as seven years (or even longer depending on how backed up Social Security is with regard to CDRs, continuing disability reviews). Yes, in a sense you have to prove you are still disabled, but not in an "active sense". Individuals who are awarded disability benefits only lose them during a review of their claim...when there is evidence of what SSA calls medical improvement. This is usually very difficult for SSA to prove because a person's medical records will seldom ever demonstrate that their condition has improved.
