Can a husband and wife both receive Social Security Disability?
Many people confuse SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) with SSI with regard to the factors that affect their benefits. If you are receiving SSDI, your disability benefit is based on the work you performed prior to becoming disabled, not on need. This is a crucial difference between SSI and SSDI.
SSDI is not like the SSI program because there are no restrictions to the amount both a husband and wife can receive on their SSDI disability benefits. Each person's benefit is based upon their own work records. In fact, SSDI beneficiaries can receive pensions, stock income, rental income or any other kind of monetary benefits with no effect on their SSDI.
SSI, like all need based programs, has income and resource limits that affect eligibility. In the SSI program, an individual can be paid $771 (2019) and a husband or wife with an eligible spouse can receive a total of $1157.00 (2019 couples rate). As you can see, this is not the full amount each individual could receive on their own.
Furthermore, any other kind of income or resource for either spouse will potentially affect SSI benefit amounts and eligibility.
In summary, both husband and wife can receive their full amount of SSDI.
