Can you still get SSI if you are denied SSDI?
If you are an adult, there generally is only one way you might be approved for SSI but denied Social Security Disability. Social Security requires that you be insured to receive disability benefits. Your insured status is gained through your work and the payroll taxes you paid. Your payroll taxes are like insurance premiums. Once you stop working, you generally have about five years before becoming uninsured.

If you are approved for disability, but your disability onset is after the date you were last insured for the SSDI program, you will receive a denial for SSDI but an approval for SSI.
Or, you might be an adult who never worked, or you worked a job that never paid Social Security taxes. Both of these situations could result in an approval for SSI but a denial for SSDI. SSI eligibility is based on need rather than insured status, and, as such, provides the possibility of disability benefits for those who would otherwise not be able to receive a benefit.
